Spiti Winter Expedition – 9 Days Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Shimla (2,276M) → Kalpa (2,960M)
- Begin your winter adventure with a scenic drive through snow-dusted pine forests and apple orchards. Arrive in Kalpa, overlooking the majestic Kinner Kailash range. Evening at leisure with warm local dinner and acclimatization.
Day 2: Kalpa (2,960M) → Tabo (3,280M)
- Drive along the frozen Sutlej River and enter the high desert of Spiti. Witness dramatic mountain terrain changing colors. Visit the 1,000-year-old Tabo Monastery, known as the “Ajanta of the Himalayas.” Overnight stay in Tabo village.
Day 3: Tabo (3,280M) → Kaza (3,800M)
- Morning visit to Dhankar Monastery perched between cliffs. Continue the drive to Kaza — the heart of Spiti Valley. Stroll through the winter streets of Kaza, enjoy café hopping, and acclimatize to the altitude.
Day 4: Kaza (3,800M) → Key Monastery → Kibber (4,270M) → Return to Kaza (3,800M)
- Explore the iconic Key Monastery, surrounded by snowfields. Continue to Kibber village, home of the elusive snow leopard. Enjoy the winter silence of the valley before returning to Kaza by evening.
Day 5: Kaza (3,800M) → Chicham (4,500M)
- Cross one of the world’s highest bridges — the Chicham Bridge. Experience breathtaking views of deep gorges and frozen valleys. Evening stay in a cozy village homestay, with traditional Spitian meals and local warmth.
Day 6: Chicham (4,500M) → Langza (4,400M)
- Drive to Langza, the fossil village, framed by the grand Buddha statue overlooking snow-covered mountains. Explore the local homes, learn about Spitian art, and enjoy a golden sunset over the white valley.
Day 7: Langza (4,400M) → Dhankar (3,895M) via Dhankar Lake (4,140M)
- Descend toward Dhankar, the ancient cliff-top monastery. Short trek to the frozen Dhankar Lake if weather permits. Capture the mystical winter reflections and stay overnight in Dhankar village.
Day 8: Dhankar (3,895M) → Kalpa (2,960M)
- Retrace your route along the frozen Spiti River, descending back into Kinnaur. Warm evening in Kalpa with a relaxed dinner and views of the snow-lit Kinner Kailash peaks.
Day 9: Kalpa (2,960M) → Shimla (2,275M)
- Final drive through winding winter roads to Shimla. Trip concludes with beautiful memories of Spiti’s frozen magic and mountain hospitality.

This is a moderate trek. Cold and high-altitude conditions can be challenging, but the walking is mostly gentle with minimal steep trails. Basic fitness and prior acclimatization are recommended.
